On Wednesday, April 22, four people were killed in a wrong way crash in Sacramento.
According to California Highway Patrol, the accident happened just before 2.30 a.m. when a Toyota Prius being driven by an unidentified woman was heading east in the westbound lanes of U.S. Route 50 just east of downtown. She then hit a pickup truck head on near Stockton Boulevard. The pickup was then hit by a third vehicle and burst into flames. The woman driving the Prius died at the scene as well as the three men inside the pickup truck. The driver of the third vehicle only received minor injuries.
Witnesses who saw the accident called 911 and stopped to try and render assistance but all of the victims were already deceased.
According to police the Prius had been driving in the wrong direction for several miles before the accident occurred and at this stage it is not known why the Prius driver was going the wrong way. Toxicology tests on her are expected later in the week.
The westbound lanes were closed for hours for the investigation leading to congestion during the morning commute on Thursday.
